Dermatology Services

A pet's skin often leading pet owners to seek veterinary advice for skin, hair, fur & nail issues.

Did you know that depending on your pet’s breed, their skin can take up as much as 25% of their body weight? It’s no surprise then that issues related to the skin, hair, fur and nails of pets are some of the most common reasons why pet parents reach out to our veterinary team. The good news is that if diagnosed and treated early, the vast majority of these conditions can be treated and your pet can go back to feeling (and looking) great in no time. Call us at 519-307-2510 to learn more about how we can help protect your pet’s dermatological health!

What kinds of skin issues can dogs, cats and other pets get?

Our furry family members can get the same types of skin issues that we have. Their skin is exposed to so many potential irritants like parasites and allergens. In the span of their lifetime, it is possible for pets to be diagnosed with one or a number of the following conditions at least once:

  • Dandruff
  • Sunburn
  • Acne
  • Rashes
  • Hair loss
  • Open sores
  • Skin cancer

What home remedies can help my pet with their skin problem?

Our advice is to stay on the side of caution. Unfortunately, recipes or DIY solutions found on the internet can cause more harm than good. The best thing to do is to reach out to us, so our veterinarians can prescribe the most appropriate treatment or cause of action. Also, some skin conditions can actually be signs of another health problem (i.e. kidney disease) so it is important to bring your pet to the clinic for regular exams so we can rule out any possibility and make sure they receive the care they need.

How are skin conditions treated in pets?

It will vary depending on your pet’s specific diagnosis, their unique health status and your lifestyle. Oral medications, topical creams, injections, acupuncture and even surgery are all possible treatments.
